SNAPSHOTS

Print the SNAPSHOT form for each work we cover in class.  You MUST include a complete snapshot for each 250 work (403)

First and foremost- include the CREDIT LINE. Every single artwork will have one and it contains all the basic information.

Name of the artist
Title of the artwork- sculpture and any 2D works are ALWAYS underlined if hand written. Architecture is NOT underlined.
Date- When was it created?
Period/Movement- When? Cultural and time reference 
Original Location- Where is the original setting? Temple, church, domestic space, hospital, palace...

Location- Where is it now?
Patron- Did someone pay for this to be created?
Material/Technique (media)- The material is WHAT it's made of. The technique is HOW it's made.
 Information about the artwork concerning the following should also be included on every flashcard. The amount of information will vary within each category accordingly and will depend on the complexity of the artwork itself.

CONTENT- What can you see? What is the subject matter?
FORM- Finer details. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design
CONTEXT- WHY? What was happening during this time that caused this piece to be created?     Political, Economic, Religious, Social, Intellectual, Art
FUNCTION- What is its purpose? What was it made to be used for, or do?   >>> U.R.P.H.E.I.A.
STYLE- How are you able to tell the artwork can be classified by a particular artist, culture, period, art movement, etc…?
MEANING- What led up to the creation of this piece? How did this work reflect the ideas during this time in history, and allow it to be a product of its time? What is the meaning of the artwork?

U.R.P.H.E.I.A.

CONTEXT can very much determine the function. What is the intended purpose?
Artworks can usually fall under one or more of the following categories.

1.      UTILITARIAN – functional or useful items (i.e. containers, furniture, jewelry, etc.)
2.      RELIGIOUS- items made for worship, veneration, ceremonies, rituals, festivals, procession, or burial rites.
3.       POLITICAL- items meant to comment on social or political issues; wars, social injustice, propagandizing leaders or to change public opinion.
4.       HISTORICAL- records historical events
5.       ECONOMIC- art made for financial gain or as a result of a wealthy patron.
6.       INFORMATIONAL- to teach or inform; carry on a cultural tradition or moral to future generations.
7.       AESTHETICS- for the joy or search for beauty, art for arts sake.
